Millis Music Magazine with Mantis Oh

Cari Lekebusch is a well known music producer and DJ in RL in the genre techno. He´s using many pseudonyms when he is working. One of them is Mantis Oh and you can meet him in SL, there he´s having some interesting projects in both art and music. It´s always a pleasure to listen to Mantis Oh, he always give you the best tunes.

How would you describe your music, what style is it?

Good question but hard to answer, since all people have their own definitions when describing music genres. So keeping it simple is probably preffered. I would call it dance music generated with electronic instruments. Techno is nowadays a large genre with many sub genres, but I preffer to use just the genre title Techno.

How long have you been doing music?

Around 25 years - but really pretty much all my life, starting out very young growing a fascination with sound gadgets and music. Was also exposed to instruments and equipments at an infant age allready :) And professionally since right after I finished school, where I studied buisness and economics. That would help me maintaining my own label, on the buisness side of it anyways :)

Are you writing your own songs?

Yes most of the time, but I also love colaborating with other artists. Mainly i work with instrumental music, but occassionally I do write text for vocals and also perform the vocals myself besides working with vocalists. A goal of mine is always to try and do as much yourself - it creates a more coherant, uniform production. And I like to explore and learn about all aspects of music and audio creation.

If you do, what comes first when writing your songs, the lyrics or the music?

If its not instrumental, then mostly the lyrics come first. Since they usually set a very specific type of mood. So it makes more sense to adapt the music towards the lyrical content and preformance. Otherwise you'll end up changing the music a lot after the vocals are recorded.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?

Much of it from nature and life in general. I like to study nature and also various architecture during my travels around the globe. Also much inspiration derives from all the live performances, that give me tons of ideas. Performing music and creating it goes hand in hand for sure :)

Who are your role models in music?

Hmm good one LOL I actually never really had any rolemodels in music. BUT musically I had plenty of childhood heroes that inspired me to start and make something seriously out of it. To name a few * Chris The Glove Taylor * Mantronix * Kraftwerk * Man Parrish * Jonzun Crew * and many more 

How long have you played in SL? 

I started Mantis Oh march 2007 if I remember right, and try to do at least 5-6 live gigs in SL each year. Mainly been making my own events toghether with my friends and partners. But I´ve also performed at many of the classic Techno clubs around SL, like Trash Palace, Cube, The Box, Monomat, PicoPico, Area 54 ....

What is the difference between playing in SL compared to RL?

There are many simmilarities and only few minor differences =) You get text based feedback from the audience while playing and looking at the SL screen :) Thats something not yet possible at RL events. Techno is off course different in RL, since its designed to be experienced - not "listened" to. But the lack of bass, light fxs and people inside your livingroom is actually something you can fix - So its possible to make it "RL" in that sense - I love the idea of a homeparty with SL screen and huge sound system - and a webcam connection RL/SL and/or maybe what not =D

Why did you join SL? Was it because of your music-making or something else?

I wanted to have a proper look if SL had anything to offer for my label H-Productions. If it could be used for a beacon platform - which it proved it could. In a small scale but large enough to pursue. Have the feeling that platforms like this will be a much larger part of the future so its great to gather knowledge and experience. Always been into computer animated grafix, games and stuff besides music, and I do use a lot of computers in my audio production. SL is a nice way to get to know some of the basic things needed for computer game production, which is something I might pursue in the future.

Which is your favorite venue to play in? Which is your favorite song to perform?

In SL mainly on the events I throw toghether with friends, but theres been a few nice charity events I performed at also. I have a fave club in each major city around the globe. Sometimes they change of course but some of the coolest ones are: Berghain Berlin, Ageha Tokyo, Awakenings Amsterdam, Fabric London. And in the summer there are way to many cool festivals to mention on one page =D Most music I perform is my own, and I would get sick of it performing same song year after year. So the favourite song is always the latest song made LOL You are never fully satisfied, but that drives you to make another song that you can improve with the new ideas derived from the one that came before.

Do you remember your first SL gig? Please, tell us about it.

Not 100% sure were it was but perhaps at the Trash Palace. It was great in all ways, lots of people, mad chats, gestures, sim crashes, chaos and joy LOL ... and made me pursue SL more to see in what ways I could use it to promote my label, and in general have fun play =D

What are your plans for the future in SL?

I will try to maintain a small island headquarters as a beacon for my RL label and promote it. Right now I also have the LEA sim* running and after that period is done I will start planning on something else. But atm its to early to say exactly what it will look like :) Mainly what I feel makes fun will dictate what gets done in SL LOL

Millis Music Magazine with Skye Galaxy

I januari förra året, alltså snart två år sedan, så gjorde jag en underbar artistupptäckt i SL. Artisten jag upptäckte var Skye Galaxy och det tack vare Kludden som var på fest och såg honom uppträda och skickade mig en tp för att Kludden tyckte han var så otroligt bra. Skye hade en fantastisk röst och ett spännande sätt att framföra sina och andras låtar på och efter den spelningen var jag ett fan (trots att jag tyckte det lät lite trist de första minuterna).

Jag var på så många spelningar jag kunde under 2011 och det var alltid packat med avor, laggen var alltid stor och väldigt ofta så slutade det med krascher, inte bara för mig utan för hela simmen. Skye Galaxy var oerhört populär i SL och hade en stor fanskara. Jag säger var för nu har han slutat spela i SL och ägnar sig så vitt jag vet åt sin musikaliska karriär i RL. Skyes kalender ser väldigt tom ut framöver om man tittar i den och den sista spelningen skedde under hösten i år, dessförinnan var hans senaste spelning i juli.

Under 2011 började jag med mitt lilla intervjuprojekt Millis Music Magazine och en intervju med Skye stod högt upp på min lista över lämpliga intervjuoffer. Jag inledde min övertalning under våren genom att bli vän med honom och efter det första steget så hade vi några intressanta samtal om musik de gånger jag frågade honom om han var intresserad av att delta även om jag aldrig fick något svar direkt om han ville vara med eller inte. En dag sa han att jag skulle skicka honom notecardet med frågorna och i januari detta året fick jag då svaren från honom.

Lyckan var total, jag hade lyckats tänkte jag. Och vad händer då? Luften går ur mig. Det var som om jakten på hans svar var det som var viktigt för mig, inte att förmedla intervjun till mina läsare. Notecardet glömdes i mitt inventory tills häromdagen då jag råkade få se det. Nu uppträder Skye inte längre i SL men jag känner att hans svar på några av frågorna förklarar varför han inte är kvar. Plus att jag måste ju anstränga mig att lägga ut intervjun eftersom Skye gjorde det mot mig genom att delta i den.

How would you describe your music, what style is it?
What I try to do tends to be the alternative to most, so 'alternative'?

How long have you been doing music?
For as long as I can remember.

Are you writing your own songs?
Most of the time. When I am not online, this is what tends to occupy my time. That and movies with Kaden, coffee and playing fetch with my cat. Yes, fetch.

If you do, what comes first when writing your songs, the lyrics or the music?
The music, though I know a few who write lyrics prior to their recording and are just as well off. For me it is easier to lay down a track and let ad-libbing do the writing for me.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
Currently, my balcony. For most of my life I only knew tall buildings and car parks, it is a nice change, the trees, the animals. You wouldn't think we were so close to the city if you saw it. People often inspire me, as well, who they might be and if they are satisfied in knowing it.

Who are your role models in music?
I have found that if you pull from all ends when studying something that truly interests you, your work tends to reflect that in a very positive way. So I do just that. If you like black and white photos, for example, go out and study everything else related to photography, regardless of its medium or subject matter.

How long have you played in SL?
Off and on for two years.

Do you also play in RL?
Yes.

What is the difference between playing in SL compared to RL?
RL pays more, a lot more. But seriously, there is a lot of unnecessary drama in SL. What is the point of a second world with just as many problems as the first? Leave your baggage at the door. In a positive light, SL has allowed me many hours of practice and the people are (for the most part) exquisite.

Why did you join SL? Was it because of your music-making or something else?
It can be a decent form of income. I was home from college at the time, when I was still attending.

Which is your favorite venue to play in?
Such a cheeky question, this. ;)

Do you remember your first SL gig? Please, tell us about it.
I do, actually. After attending my first concert in-world of a friend of my only friend on SL at the time, Keiko Takamura, I purchased an audio stream and posted the URL in a live music group, stating that anyone who wished to listen was more than welcome to (and an apology for the spam). Earlier that week, I was asked to play at the Wild Rose by another friend I had just met.

What are your plans for the future in SL?
To migrate back to the real world. Momentum is picking up, new heights are in sight, my baby face slowly dissipating. Future logging in to say 'hello' will not be a problem, though.

Now its time to restart Millis Music Magazine again and first out in this restart is Ultraviolet Alter. She is an talented musician with a special sound in her songs, full of electronic and magic sounds. You can listen to Ultraviolets music on Soundcloud.


Before the interview starts I want to say that the answers in this are from July 2011.

How would you describe your music, what style is it?
It is hard for me to say that there is one style, I dont try to find or stay in a style although I can say there are many styles I dont do. But I have had the reflection that what I do has a signature in some way.

How long have you been doing music?
In this form not very long, I do have some acoustic instruments that I play too like the Oud, Kemenche, classical guitar, violin as an example.

Are you writing your own songs?
Everything I do is original.

What comes first when writing your songs, the lyrics or the music?
For performance I try to prepare sounds and grooves so that when I play it is as close to improvisation as possible with as much 'imprevu' as possible. I have also another side which is recording and composing which can be found on Souncloud.com with my name UltraSonne. I do some music for machinima on SL too.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
From dance and from different cultures around the world, their colours art and music their expressions. I dont look for inspiration for music I look for sympathethic connections that resonate in feelings and somehow I know that they will play out in what I do.

Who are your role models in music?
I wouldn't say I have role models, there are musicians and music that I like, but then that is not the same all the time, it changes like runes and things seem to find me and we spend time together for a while and become friends.


How long have you played in SL?
Maybe a year and a half or so, time passes very quickly.

Do you also play in RL?
Only for or with friends.

What is the difference between playing in SL compared to RL?
You enter into an immersive universe in sl where you can create not just the music but the nature also and where all play a part to make it happen in the moment. It is not any less real than what is called RL (I prefere the term FL - First Life) I love the idea of the moment unique, happening once, that leaves a trace in our experience, the outside form then dissembles and has to be reborn anew, like it never happened before.

Why did you join SL? Was it because of your music-making or something else?
It was just to explore what I had heard about SL

Which is your favorite venue to play in? Which is your favorite song to perform?
I dont have a favourite venue as I play mainly for vernissage each one is the favourite of the moment. I dont have favourite song or tune as I never do something more than once.

Do you remember your first SL gig? Please, tell us about it.
I do it was a vernissage for Betty Tureaud who was trusting enough to let me play at her opening. I was very nervous and not sure I wouldnt ruin the evening but something else took over and it was a great night...

What are your plans for the future in SL?
I dont plan I just trust and know that good things will happen - and they always do......

Millis Music Magazine with JaNa KYoMooN

Earlier this year, in February, I listened to this musician for the first time. And it was a great listening - one hour full of electronic music with a vibe of world music. I really enjoyed it. The musician was JaNa KYoMooN and I have been trying to be at her conserts as often as I can.

JaNa KYoMooN or Jan Pulsford (her RL-name) had a lot of experience in music in RL when she decided to start in Second Life to get a new platform for her music. You can read about that and more in this further down and in this great interview she did with The Metaverse Journal.

How would you describe your music, what style is it?
I play music especially prepared for virtual worlds and beyond fronted by the avatar JaNa KYoMooN, performing as a solo virtual artist mixing electronica with ambient improvisations and rhythmic reflections in "a gallery of soundscapes and audio paintings."

My musical pictures are sketched with reflective piano and synths tinged with echoes of world jazz and triphop.

Some people have likened this late night ambient music to a musical massage. I tell people to "Set your mind and your environment to midnight!" It is an hour to relax and unwind and help in healing from the stress of life.

For best effect plug into a big screen and put the music into your speakers or headphones, dim the lights, light some candles, pour a glass of wine or chamomile tea and RELAX! I love sharing music with listeners who use their avatars to come into Second Life and be part of the future of live interactive performance art streaming straight into your living room via your computer.

How long have you been doing music?
All my life - which is a very long time - it's not for everyone. You need nerves of steel and a very strong constitution to survive the roller coaster existence - It's not as easy as it looks or sounds!

Are you writing your own songs?
Everything I play in SL is original. I capture it into the computer using Logic Audio and then broadcast it at showtime.

It's a very time consuming process - computers do not write music - we tell the computer what to play!

If you do, what comes first when writing your songs, the lyrics or the music?
They come at the same time - obviously you spend a lot of time refining and developing the idea.

I mostly perform instrumental music in SL and the title is reflected in the music. When I write songs ( which I actually do not perform in SL as I am not a singer ) I write both words to other peoples music and music to other people's words - I try to find the same place they were in when they were inspired and go there too. I love words.

You often hear writers and artists talking about going to "that place" so I think of it as a virtual room that creatives go to to communicate and collaborate in our minds. It is one of my favourite things to do.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
Definitely in the countryside and beauty of nature. The feeling of the land - it's link to the past - I love walking and often imagine those who trod the same paths.

Good healthy food, fresh greens, red wine - oh yes and paying bills is always good inspiration! LOL!

Who are your role models in music?
Well I admire anyone who is REALLY doing it - being a musician/entertainer/artist is a hard thing to be and I salute anyone who is successful at it.

There are so many who inspire - from all worlds of music. I often hear something on the web and look into it further. So I am constantly inspired by different people - one day it might be Elgar the next William Blake, the next Miles Davis and then Imogem Heap, Ryuichi Sakamoto to Lester Young, Billy Strayhorn to Lady Gaga, Vaughn Williams to Massive Attack, mountain music to bhangra, trance to jazz - I especially love new styles that mix everything up.

How long have you played in SL?
My original avatar Emmeline Pankhurst came into SL in early 2006 to explore the music and arts scene in the virtual world - I started playing as JaNa KYoMooN in 2007 - quite a daunting prospect for someone who had always been a behind the scenes keyboard player/ writer/ producer . . eventually I got the hang of it! Being a virtual artist has opened up a whole new world . . . JaNa KYoMooN even won the "Best New Age Artist" at the SL Anthology Music Awards!

Since then I've played hundreds of concerts in SL including Art Galleries, Theatres, Poetry Readings along with charity events like Relay for Life, UNICEF and benefits for Haiti, Bush Fires, earthquakes etc. - Second Life is a very giving and helping community.

I was also part of the Second Life 6th and 7th birthday celebrations with an exhibition of music and virtual creative collaboration.

Creatively I have collaborated with nnoiz papp, Junivers Stockholm, Miles Eleventhauer, Cypress Rosewood, Torben Asp, Trowser Boa, Leanna Luftig, Swina Allen, Dubhna and other story tellers and musicians and really look forward to continuing that side of SL.

Do you also play in RL?
I used to - I was lucky enough to tour the world as keyboard player for some big pop artists but now I really enjoy the intimacy of on line performance - the feeling that you are in someone's house who really wants to listen to you.

I did a live event in London last October which mixed both realities and based on that I am trying to set a monthly "Illusion of Reality" evening where we can mix virtual and real performances projected onto a big screen with people participating from all over the world including the graphic wizardry of tuna oddfellow and interfaced dreamscape whose visuals and particle shows are really fantastic and inspiring.

I would also like to do more virtual house concerts - I think many people are intimidated by Second Life - and rightly so - it can be an extremely frustrating program to navigate and learn to use . . . but eventually I can see a future of being booked to play virtually at house concerts and parties. Can you imagine the party entertainment being an avatar who talks directly to the person/child at a gathering in someone's house? It's new territory.

Also there are networks of doctors and patients in hospitals and hospices throughout the world who are embracing virtual worlds and private virtual concerts can be organised for groups or individuals in the privacy of their own room or ward.
I think we are only now realising what part virtual worlds will play in our future and the potential for communication and arts it will play in our technology driven society.

What is the difference between playing in SL compared to RL?
Of course there is no comparison between playing an arena or theatre and playing to a computer screen but if you are doing small places like coffee shops you are likely to have more people in the online SL audience - and they are really attentive plus the sound is always great! I just wish I could reach more people on line but that will happen eventually with faster internet service...

There is a lot of preparation - I mean you cant just turn on the computer and there's JaNa ready to go ... you have to program/prepare the music and depending on your computer set up, do the pre-production work to make it ready to stream
Sending notices and listing in events are the biggest pain and most time consuming thing about doing the shows but also the most necessary - if you don't promote no one will come!

It is a great parallel to making it work in the real world and I think for young artists starting off an invaluable learning experience. If your business plan works in SL there's a good chance it will work in RL.

Why did you join SL? Was it because of your music-making or something else?
Like most musicians I´m always looking for new avenues for getting my music heard and meeting other creatives.

One big result of exploring music in SL is it showed me there are many people unable to leave their house or even their bed for one reason or another and being in Second Life gives them an opportunity to belong to a community and interact using their avatar to explore places not available to them in the outside world. That is a huge positive side of SL and so I try and play music that uplifts the soul and helps people to unwind and heal from the stress of their life and the feeling that we are all connected on a global grid through the music.

Which is your favourite venue to play in?
The music ALL music Peace Park - which has changed locations many times but the feeling is always the same. It was built as a place of inner and global peace through music and the arts and over the years has hosted many concerts and housed a dulcimer museum, technology school, poetry evenings, a peace gallery, music for winter festivals and the centre piece (or peace) is the peace pyramid.

Which is your favourite song to perform?
The Red Moon gets the most positive reaction - it is a solo piano piece in waltz time - people seem to love it and it's wonderful to feel their reaction.

It was inspired by the first red moon I had ever seen when I went to visit Tennessee in the late 1980s! - it was hanging over the lake and i can still see it in my minds eye - now years later it is really touching people. That's the nice thing, music is timeless.

Do you remember your first SL gig? Please, tell us about it.
It was as part of the Peace Park Trio with Cypress Rosewood and Trefies Kaufman and triple streamed!

We mixed native american flute with dulcimer and electronica - I was so microphone shy I could hardly talk - now you can't shut me up LOL!!!
It was a huge technological achievement!

What are your plans for the future in SL?
Well I am hoping there will be more development from Linden Labs - I sometimes wonder if we as performing artists have gone as far as we can with SL. They don't seem to have kept up with the users too much and, in my opinion, have released some pretty silly mistakes over the last couple of years.

I have to step away every now and again and catch my breath and regain enthusiasm as I can really see the value and potential in virtual worlds. However we are at the mercy of broadband speeds and access too which I recently experienced when I moved back to the UK and struggled for four months trying to get a stable connection!

Currently I am working on consolidating THe MuSiC oF JaNa KYoMooN that has been played at the GooDBYe WeeKeND SHoW which is now in its fourth year - and making the shows available as downloads.

Ändrad målsättning pga omständigheter jag absolut kunde ha rått över

Jag skrev i söndags kväll att ni skulle få läsa intervjun med JaNa KYoMooN under den kommande vecka första halva. Den halvan har redan varit. Det får bli under andra halvan helt enkelt, dvs söndag. RL och lite annat kom emellan. Och nu hade jag tänkt jobba med intervjun (redigera, leta videos och bilder) nu på morgonen för att lägga ut den nu på förmiddagen men då kom den utmärkta musiken på Summer Soul emellan och snart väntar en heldag i RL. Så kan det gå med Millis optimistiska målsättningar!

En påminnelse till mig

Tidigt ikväll hamnade jag av en slump på en spelning som JaNa KYoMooN hade. Det påminde mig om att hon har lämnat in svar till min intervjuserie som jag har. Millis Music Magazine with Dub Mode

In January this year I went to an event in SL and there I could hear some fabulous tunes spinning around - it was a mix of many different music styles. It was Dub Mode´s tunes I heard and I have tried to listening to him in SL as often as I can after that. He´s a producer/DJ and you can hear his music at his Soundcloud.


How would you describe your music, what style is it?
It's a variety of styles. I'm trying to use multiple styles into one from Techno to Dubstep to House and so on. The past has a really huge impact on me. That's why I'm always trying to spin old vinyl and include them to some newer tunes.

How long have you been doing music?
Since I can think of it.

Are you writing your own songs?
I'm not writing but I'm producing them.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
From everywhere.

I cannot specified.

Millis Music Magazine with The Follow

Next band out in Millis Music Magazine is a band from the midwest in the US - The Follow. They are known for their way to combine real life and second life with concerts that makes great sucess in both worlds. They did a World Tour in SL for an example - five shows in five countries in one day.

The Follow have three members: Troy (Troy) on guitarr and voice, Powers (Mat) on drums and samples and AJ (Amy) on bass and voice. They are playing rock influenced by Pink Floyd, U2 and Radiohead and have created a great sound. Listening to their music makes me happy and in a good mood and I think that the main reason to that is their skills in what they are doing, on record and on stage.

How would you describe your music, what style is it?
Panoramic Rock.

How long have you been doing music?
The band's first show was in 1989. AJ was with the band from the beginning but didn't begin playing in the band until 1997.

Are you writing your own songs?
We sure do. Troy is the primary songwriter.

If you do, what comes first when writing your songs, the lyrics or the music?
Well, it depends. Usually, the music and melody come first and then lyrics find their way. It's an organic process and we work on allowing the music to flow freely.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
We find it from all around and from all within. From the beauty of the oceans to the wonder of the cosmos and from the awe of our creator to the introspection of feelings, we are inspired by truth and it's pursuit. We are inspired by the human condition.

Who are your role models in music?
Our role models would be those artists and bands that no one has ever heard of. But, they keep writing. They keep recording. They keep playing. And, it's not only for the fanfare that may come one day. It's not only for making a living at doing what they love. It's also because when they wake up, they just don't have a choice. It's in them, they must do it to feel right. It's who they are and using their gifts is fulfilling on its own.

How long have you played in SL?
We are celebrating two years of performing SL on June 26th, 2011. The band will celebrate with a performance at Boom Pony Music Club on Saturday June 25th at 7pm.

Do you also play in RL?
Yes, the band plays in real life.

What is the difference between playing in SL compared to RL?
In many ways they are similar. The band has been mixing our own sound for several years. When we show up at a venue, we give the sound engineer just two channels to plug into their system. So, it was a fairly easy transition, technically, when we started broadcasting into SL.

The live performance itself is very interesting. The band has been thrilled with the connections we have been able to make with the SL residents. After shows in RL we love to hang and talk with people. But, many times we are rushed to break down our gear and load it into the van. So, if someone isn't willing to find their way to the back alley of the venue, or if they aren't will to miss the band we were playing before that particular evening to chat with us, then we miss them.

Chatting with show attendees in local chat after our shows and in private IMs is such a thrill. We enjoy the immediate feedback and the ability to carry on multiple conversations at once. Speaking of immediate feedback….we try to keep an eye on local chat during the shows too. We don't hear applause, but we sure can feel the vibe of the room and we can feel it's temperature that way.

Why did you join SL? Was it because of your music-making or something else?
We can in specifically as a way to share our music around the world. We have done this, but we have also found this wonderful world of creative people. We have been accepted graciously by them and we value the friendships we have formed and those we are developing.

Which is your favorite venue to play in?
The one that is full of people tipping the owner!

Which is your favorite song to perform?
I think if you asked each band member today you'd get three answers. Tomorrow, perhaps three more. We definitely have our few favorites each.

Do you remember your first SL gig? Please, tell us about it.
We were nervous. Behind the scenes at the broadcast location things were frantic. It was new territory and we were heading into a new culture. We didn't want to do or say anything wrong. We hoped the internet connection would sustain four computers and that we could focus on performing instead of the tech gear. We played at Trax Resource Center who is owned by Bones Writer, whom at the time was assisted by Tangle Giano. We still hold both of the as dear friends and remain grateful to their endless hours of help and expertise given that helped get The Follow up and rolling in SL. Once the performance was underway, we had a blast and I don't remember it being horrible….so, we must have made it through just fine :)

What are your plans for the future in SL?
Bands, solo artists, digital artists, programmers and other creatives do what they do. We try to have strategies and plans in place to hopefully develop the most exposure for our art while also hoping to hold on to our values. So, The Follow plans on doing that very thing. We are grateful to the residence of SL for continuing to give us a wonderful place for expression. In that, the future of art within SL is up to the residence.

Millis Music Magazine with MommaLuv Skytower

My friend Apmel Goosson has been on several of this musician concerts and got hooked and thanks to him I have also discovered her: MommaLuv Skytower. She is an electronic artist with exciting gigs with nice electropop. She's having a very special voice and combined with some raw beat makes her music unique - in SL.

How would you describe your music, what style is it?
Predominately my music is avantguard acoustic electronica, which I have deemed Avantronik Mayhem. Much easier to say and remember-or so i think ;)

How long have you been doing music?
I grew up with music and went to a magnet music school, so all of my life.

Are you writing your own songs?
All my own songs are composed, produced, and written by myself. I also do collaborate with other by which lyrics I have written and sang are used and usually I´m in the process involved in final production if some one mixes my vocals into their own creations.

If you do, what comes first when writing your songs, the lyrics or the music?
Each song is different in approach. Sometimes I have lyrics and build music around them and sometimes I´m working on an instrumental and lyrics will magically fall into place.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
Life experiences of my own and others. The need to contribute to the wrongs and injustices I see in the world around us, by vocalizing what I perceive as corrections to them. Silly things I may notice in general between humans interacting with one another.

Who are your role models in music?
Nina Simone is top of the list, then Tom Waits, Moby, OrbitaL, Front 242, and many other undergound not so mainstream artists who had tough struggles getting their music listened to by the mainstream.

How long have you played in SL?
Since November of 2010.

Do you also play in RL?
Yes, but have taken a hiatus since my arrival in SL.


What is the difference between playing in SL compared to RL?
Hmmmm......the major difference is not being able to see the audience then not being able to capture my RL expression in my perfomance and the little distractions in local that do not always jive with the performance. Meaning people having random conversations during a performance, that in RL one wouldnt be prived to being up on a stage out of earshot from the audiences conversations. ;)

Why did you join SL? Was it because of your music-making or something else?
Two reasons: friends who were performing here said I shouild try it- so I made an account and didnt see how it would work for me. Then a year later Real Life circumstances put me in a position to give it a try. So I came back in and learned about the SL music scene and gave it a shot.

Which is your favorite venue to play in? Which is your favorite song to perform?
I dont have one favorite venue, however my favorite venues to play in are ones that are respectful to the artist and have a lot of entusiam towards artists in general and work just as hard as the artist does to promote bot. I also like the venues where everyone is interacting and there are not bots or alts pumping up whats just not there.

I do not like venues that act like they are doing the artist a favor and do not like to be approached that way either, nor do I like venue owners or promoters that tell me their money woes. That will definitely not get me to perform in a venue. My thing is this: a venue in SL or RL is there to do one thing: deliver music to the public and with that being said- sometimes there is a financial loss, but no one has to know that nor should the artist have to bare that burden. And for this I shy away from open mics and tip only venues, as several that I have performed in are not worth anyones time because ultimately the venue owners do nothing to promote either. They think rezzing a tip jar and having a host(bot or alt) puts them in the league with other great venues that pay artists and/or guarantee an audience. No artist wants to perform for no one.

Do you remember your first SL gig? Please, tell us about it.
Actually my first gig was at Pop Art Lab owned by CLaus Uriza and broadcasted on Treet Tv. Not the usual lead in to a new artist in SL. It took a few months to prepare and was an unforgetable experience for me and laid the ground work for all my perfomances that followed after. As I was immediately accepted by several of the artist communities active in SL and my shows evolved based on those introductions. Also as a result I am asked to do huge events that include some of SL's Alist.

What are your plans for the future in SL?
To use it as a platform to get my music heard and include it in my future RL gigs.

Millis Music Magazine with junivers Stockholm

Now it´s time to restart Millis Music Magazine and publish a new interview and this time its a swede who is in focus. His name is junivers Stockholm and he is an excellent guitarplayer/musician. I have seen Junivers several times performing at swedish events and I have always got hooked by his music.

How would you describe your music, what style is it?
I love a lot of styles and in a personal way I hope my music reflects that.

How long have you been doing music?
Since I started to play. Thats quite a lot years now :)

Are you writing your own songs?
I do all my songs. Sometimes i collaborate. Medora Chevalier writes some of my lyrics. Josina Burgess writes some lyrics too for my songs and she also did some melody for me. I did a tune together with Jana Kyomoon. I also did a lot of live improvisations with a lot of SL musicians using the software Ninjam. Al Hofmann, Way Sands and I made some live performance using Ninjam.

If you do, what comes first when writing your songs, the lyrics or the music?
Mostly music comes first. But I´m open when the inspiration hits me :)

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
It can be anything actually.

Who are your role models in music?
Any musician that works for a better planet.

How long have you played in SL?
I started to play on SL instruments (Hyper instruments by Robbie Dingo). A lot of people came to jams they could participate in. I started to do that 4 years ago. I have been streaming in SL about 3 years now.

Do you also play in RL? What is the difference between playing in SL compared to RL?
I very seldom perform in RL. I would like to :) Cant really tell what I think is different.

Why did you join SL? Was it because of your music-making or something else?
I´m interested in tech development. After have seen a tv program about virtual worlds I tried it and got hooked. Now I´m staying because there are so many great people and artist that I collaborate with. Its both music, shows and awareness work we do.



Which is your favorite venue to play in? Which is your favorite song to perform?
I´ve been in some great shows. No venue can compare with being in a show with lots of change of scenery. The lightshow "Follow the Light" is also great to be in and that stage has been built in many places in SL. Some venues are focusing on spreading awareness, like Four Bridges Project, and I do prefere to play at such venues.

What are your plans for the future in SL?
Hm.. there always new things, new challenges to meet. Right now we´re working on a new lightshow, but also a new show, the Change, with the fabulous art group CARP.

Millis Music Magazine with [engrama]

Now its time for a (favourite)group here in my Music Magazine. Its time for [engrama] - a group with two members, Lakua Arriaga (drums and song) and Pupito Helstein (guitar and song). They are a couple in RL and they met in Argentina for some years ago and now they live in Spain. [engrama] is a band that often are playing in SL and they are a very appreciated liveband. They play both covers and their own songs. Their music can be described as suggestive post rock.


[engrama] has a website where you can listen and download some of their songs.

How would you describe your music, what style is it?
Our music slowly melts into the world with atmospheric soundscapes. Drawing from influences like Mogwai, Sigur Ros, and the tamer side of Sonic Youth. We mix original instrumentals post rock songs with cover such Bjork, Joy Division or Bon Iver... and also original songs with vocals or songs in spanish.
We are a live band playing all the instruments at real time without backtracks! Drums guitar and vocals at real time.

How long have you been doing music?
In real life, Pupito Helstein played in a few bands within the independent music scene in Buenos Aires. [engrama], however, is born of both members living together and sharing a common interest in musical experimentation. We play since 2 years ago with [engrama].

Are you writing your own songs?
Yes, we write our own songs. But more than "write" we just sit and start playing and sometimes we record it and then we listen the record and say: "oh, this can be a song" So we write on the improvisation.

If you do, what comes first when writing your songs, the lyrics or the music?
When the songs are instrumentals, we just start with improvisation and if the songs has lyrics, we do it in the same way. We never write the lyrics on a paper, we just play.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
The inspiration is very strange, you never know where you will find. Right now we live surrounded by nature and is very nice to compose by looking at the mountains. But inspiration comes in many forms ... after reading a book or listen to a good album or taking a walk through the forest.

Who are your role models in music?
We have influences, but I think these influences do not limit us in a model to follow.


How long have you played in SL?
In may of 2011 it will be 2 years ago we are playing in SL.

Do you also play in RL?
Yes, we also have gigs in rl. We used to play in Buenos Aires when we was living there and now we are playing in Spain.

What is the difference between playing in SL compared to RL?
Playing in SL is very different to playing in RL. You are at your home when you play in SL, with all the instruments already seted, and you can be more relax cause you can play in your pajamas hahaha.
And play in rl its another thing, you have to go to the place, and set all the instruments, make check sound... And you have the people there, looking at you.

Why did you join SL?
We joined beacouse a boring day. :)

Which is your favorite venue to play in? Which is your favorite song to perform?
We like to play in places that are not necessarily venues, such as in roll sims games, theaters, museums, art galleries, gothic clubs, strange places ... But our favorite places to play are those in which we received a good response from the public, couse our music is not very common in SL.
And our favourite song.... I dont have personaly favourite but I enjoy more playing our original songs.

Do you remember your first SL gig? Please, tell us about it.
The first day we went to SL, I remember it was a cold rainy day in May (autumn in Buenos Aires) We had bought the PC game Lost, but it was broken and we was boring so then I remembered that there was a virtual world called Second Life and we downloaded it. The first day we went to a sand box and after we discovered that there was the possibility of communicating with the voice, we decided to do a concert. Then someone rezzed a stage and lights ... We could not believe it... We dont even knew of the existence of the lindens as real money, or concerts in SL, or streams. We just played without known all those things. So the first day we joined in Second Life we made our first gig.

What are your plans for the future in SL?
Our plans in Second Life are beyond our band. We have created along with a collective of musicians, a group and a website called http://www.livemusicreview.info/. This website is for all those musicians who play in second life without backtracks, and all those venues that only take their places those musicians playing 100% live music.
It is not fair that 80% of gigs in the list of live events are about karaoke/live singer or DJ.
And the plans for [engrama]... we are now recording our next album called "The walking frog" and we are going to keep playing in SL and also RL. :)

Thanks to my good friend Bock McMillan, I have been to several concerts with Strum Diesel in SL. Strum is a very talented musician (guitarr and piano) with a very nice voice and amazing songs.

I like the fact that I can hear what I'm singing when I play in SL... RL places can be noisey and rude.

My favorite venue would have to be my very own, Lucky. I like to sing 'Hocus Pocus'.

It was at The Kissing Booth... my sound wasn't the greatest but I made a good impression... It was VERY fun.

I'm going to keep going, it's great.

Millis Music Magazine with Krakov Letov

Next SL-artist in Millis Music Magazine is Krakov Letov. He is a busy man with many projects. Krakov runs the pub Notes Shack Pub with a live stage, which often offer events with more or less famous but always exciting musicians. He also has a store KLP HQ Store that includes instruments of various kinds and even a small art gallery.


But the reason why Krakov is in this blogpost is because of his musical talent. He plays a soft and relaxing music. Its like I´m always gets sleepy when I´m listening to his music and that is not a bad thing for me because I find his music very soothing and of course good.

How would you describe your music, what style is it?
It's an improvisational music with a mix of ambient, electronica, experimental and post-rock elements. Still to classify it as a one whole, I would go as experimental music.

How long have you been doing music?
I started learning Piano when I was 13, however "more seriously" I started to make music about 2 years ago which was the start of some sort of minimal Experimental and Drone Ambient music, involving nothing but only guitar and loops.

Are you writing your own songs?
I like to think I am composing on the go. Every different show I do in Second Life is a different type of song, something I don't think I would ever play before. However there is these songs I come up during the show that leaves me a good impression and I try to turn them into a shorter version than the 30 minute limit I have for each song I play in Second Life.

If you do, what comes first when writing your songs, the lyrics or the music?
I am not a lyricist, nor a singer but the whole process of creating the music comes from one simple loop. If I like the loop I try to "evolve" it into more complex forms of music.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
The inspiration comes from the music and radio stations I am listening too. I even get inspirations while taking a stroll in the park, or waiting in a busy airport for your next destination.

Who are your role models in music?
Nick McCabe, Brian Eno, Jón Þór Birgisson, Robert Fripp, David Sylvian and Laurie Anderson.

How long have you played in SL?
I started around April 2009, so far almost 2 years.

Do you also play in RL?
I do. I have played few times, and I hope to play more in the future.


What is the difference between playing in SL compared to RL?
In Second Life people come to your event just so they can focus on your music. You have more freedom to experiment with sounds, and more feedback. Hard to get a good ammount of crowd to come to the events, but still the right crowd who respects and enjoy your music is better than a laggy sim full of people.

In Real Life is much different. The hard thing is setting up the equipment and soundcheck, but then its a different feeling. I think people need to have the guts to go out in the crowd and show them what you can do. It's really more accomplishing than Second Life, but still I preffer playing in Second Life. In Real Life it's harder to please the crowd, esspecialy where I live people are not that open minded for different type of music. Not much space to experiment with sounds too.

Why did you join SL?Was it because of your music-making or something else?
I found out about SL in 2005, but then I couldn't really play it because I didn't have much bandwith to spare. I joined with this avatar in December 2007 and I had no idea that there was a live music community at first. I found out about it in April 2008 and was a follower since. I created The Notes Shack Pub (under a different name) in May 2008 and since then have had many live musicians and bands play at the venue.

Which is your favorite venue to play in?
My favourite venue's to play at are Germelshausen Coffeeshop, The Haus of Lux and F.A.B. They offer great range of artists and DJ's, have great listeners and for the main reason they are really great looking.

Do you remember your first SL gig? Please, tell us about it.
For Live Music it was in April 2009. It was a open mic event and did a 30 minutes set. I had predefined set back then, but improvised more with guitar.

What are your plans for the future in SL?
Find more venues to play at and more listeners into this kind of music. Same for artists who want to collaborate for dual stream events.

Millis Music Magazine with Nnoiz Papp

It is almost a year ago since Apmel took me to listen to Nnoiz Papp, but it was not until the concert number two I really got hooked on his music. Nnoiz plays an exciting mix of funk, electronica and world music with a lot of different sound elements in his songs and it sounds like nothing else I've heard. Apmel have written about him several times on his blog.


The man behind Nnoiz Papp lives in Germany and is a musician and a form of sound artist. His music and work is on his websites http://www.nnoiz.com/ and http://www.krachmaschinen.de/ . Nnoiz also has his own sim there he has built it all by himself and there is the opportunity to experiment with music and sounds. He says that everyone is welcome to his "papp-o-phonia island".



How would you describe your music, what style is it?
I´m playing in different styles. Mostly I play modern grooves with oriental elements. I also play experimental concerts with dark ambient sounds. In this concerts I play with inworld sound elements. I have programmed some audio objects for this.

How long have you been doing music?
Very long ....;-) Starting in the age of 8 with piano, then with 13 I began to play oboe and guitar.

Are you writing your own songs?
Yes, I only play own stuff.

If you do, what comes first when writing your songs, the lyrics or the music?
I perfom instrumental music only.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
I listen to very different music. Much barock music (Bach), many ethno music, much oriental music, funk music, and progressive metal.

I have no dress code at home ;-) Its possible for me to have all instruments available, thats not possible on stage in RL, or much work.

Why did you join SL? Was it because of your music-making or something else?
I did´nt want to make music at all. I wanted to have a furniture shop or something, or a garden shop ;-) I started with building and sculpturing. I had many textures done in other 3d programs. so I had to tranfer them to SL. I like the interactivity in SL. You can build something and others are looking to it in the same time, thats great, or you can build together with others.

Which is your favorite venue to play in? Which is your favorite song to perform?
I have no special venue. I like it to play underwater....nice concerts I had a Bryn OH´s places.

Do you remember your first SL gig? Please, tell us about it.
Yes, I remember. I was completely tired after it. Its hard to concentrate to play music with all this other tools. This was new for me. It is necessary to be able to multitask....

What are your plans for the future in SL?
I want to promote my music better. I´m starting to play my music at japanese SIM´s this month.

Millis Music Magazine with POL Arida

First out of the artists I´m curious about is POL Arida. I remember very well the first time I heard him. It was spring in 2009 and he was playing after Bara Jonsson in a venue. POL started hammering the guitarr and I remember it sounded amazin. Then I crashed and I couldn´t come back to the venue because it was full and I was so disappointed because I wanted to hear a lot more of the guitarr. I didn´t hear more of POL that night but I have been doing that a lot of times after that.

POL Arida is a sing-songwriter from Scotland with a very special voice and a very special guitarr technique and you can read more about him at his excellent website, in this article and in one of my earlier blogposts.

How would you describe your music, what style is it?
My music is not of a perticular style, I suppose alternative acoustic. I tend to try and write things which are a bit different from styles I have heard. I don`t really listen to music as that tends to influence me too much.

How long have you been doing music?
I have been writing all my life, but stopped about 15 years ago. 5 years ago I picked up the guitar and started hitting it:~) Then started writing again.

Are you writing your own songs?
All my songs are self written.... go to http://polarida.com/ for music, video, words and pictures...and much more.

If you do, what comes first when writing your songs, the lyrics or the music?
I write `subject specific` songs about subjects that I want to analys. The musical part sometimes comes first, but then there is a long delay as I decide on subject and words.

Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
Well I open my eyes:)

Who are your role models in music?
None.

How long have you played in SL?
Nearly 3 years now.

What is the difference between playing in SL compared to RL?
I like SL because people can hear the words and can ask questions about songs. It allows people to experience the words on a much more personal level.

I came to SL to have a look and relaised they had live music. I thought...I could do that:)

Which is your favorite venue to play in?
Here are many cool venues....Pixel Hill is one I love as it specialises in original music, but there are many many more I have played that I love, some owned by friends of my music. I also like creating my own venues.

I cannot remember my first gig, it may have been the Hummingbird or Pixel Hill.

What are your plans for the future in SL?
To create more interesting projects involving original music and crossing over sl and rl in innovative ways.

Min hemlighet

Jag har läst att Apmel har skvallrat om att jag har en hemlighet. Nu är det så att hemlisen inte är speciellt upphetsande eller dramatisk utan det är bara ett litet intervjuprojekt som jag kom på i början av januari och nu har det startat. Det är så att ett av mina stora intressen är att lyssna på livemusik och jag har under min tid i SL hört många artister som jag gärna lyssnar på om och om igen när de uppträder. Idén som jag fick var att jag vill få veta mer om artisterna och deras musik och kunna sprida det vidare till mina bloggläsare. Sagt och gjort, jag ställde samman ett notecards med en förfrågan om en intervju och ett antal frågor som jag skickade ut till några av mina favoritartister.


Till min glädje har jag fått några svar och jag hoppas på fler så nu kommer jag allteftersom lägga ut svaren här på min blogg och det under rubriken Millis Music Magazine.
